Maintaining your motorbike chain

Maintaining your motorbike chain

Careful and regular maintenance (cleaning and lubrication) of your motorbike chain is essential to avoid premature wear of your chain kit and to ensure maximum life:

* For off-road use: after each ride;

* For road use: +- every 300km for chains without O-rings and +- every 500km for chains with O-rings.

Here are the key steps for a successful motorbike chain maintenance:

1/ Cleaning your motorbike chain

After placing your bike on a stand, use a chain cleaner (see QUICK CLEANER 500ml ) to spray on a cloth and run over the chain. The use of a small brush can make it easier to remove even the most difficult deposits.

For light dirt build up, put the Quick Cleaner directly onto a cloth for 4 seconds until it is well soaked in and then wrap the cloth around the chain and wipe it gently until it is clean.

For the dirtiest motorbike chains, spray the Quick Cleaner directly onto the chain; after a few seconds the deposits will come off (if not, scrub the chain with a non-metallic brush). After cleaning, use a dry cloth to remove any spray residue.

Caution, never use a metallic brush, brake/carburetor cleaner, paraffin or any other aggressive chemical product on your chain, nor steam or high pressure water cleaning.

2/ Lubrication of your chain

A version of dry lubrication sprays has been developed and effectively remedies grease splashes on the chain: the chain is optimally lubricated while remaining clean (see SPRAY RACE SYNTHETIC CHAIN 500ml )

Shake your spray well and test it on another surface before use on the chain.

While turning the rear wheel of your motorbike, spray the spray on the different lubrication points of your chain (see example in our video); clean up any excess spray with a dry cloth.

That's it!

Please note: check the chain tension as well: your motorbike chain will become slacker as you ride more and more kilometres. After fitting your chain, and then every 2000 or 3000 km, check the tension of your chain: a sag of 20 to 30 mm (gap between the chain at rest and the chain when it is wound up) is generally a good solution (look for the ideal value indicated in the manual or on the motorbike swingarm).
